Raj Bhavan delivers sanction order to Yeddyurappa’s office

A day after sanctioning prosecution of Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in alleged land scams, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj’s order on the issue was delivered this morning to the Chief Minister’s office. Mr. Yeddyurappa’s January 21 letter to Mr. Bhardwaj asking for a copy of the sanction order was received by Raj Bhavan at 11 PM, a communique said. An eight—member ministerial team had this morning staged a march to Raj Bhavan demanding that the Governor provide them a copy of the order according sanction for prosecuting Mr. Yeddyurappa. The Chief Minister had on Friday charged that the Governor had declined to furnish him a copy of the sanction order. Irked by the announcement on prosecution even before a copy of the order was given to him, Mr. Yeddyurappa had shot off a letter to Mr. Bhardwaj taking exception to his conduct. “It is very unfortunate that being a constitutional head of the state, a copy of the order passed by you was not handed over to me and the information of such an order was divulged to the press,” Mr. Yeddyurappa had said in his letter yesterday. “I have neither received the copy of the complaint petition, nor an opportunity to explain my point of view.” According to sources, angered over the denial, Mr. Yeddyurappa had planned to stage a dharna in front of the Raj Bhavan. However, later he dropped the plan and decided to write a protest letter to the Governor.

An all-out war between Governor HR Bharadwaj and the Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yedyurappa has become ugly and is turning for the worst. The last straw was when late last night BJP declared a bandh that has turned the state of Karnataka burning. The bandh has disrupted normal life and with passengers stranded, this has become proof on how a political power-play can affect the lives of many innocents out there. Pro-BJP activists took the opportunity and used the occasion well in venting out their frustration at the Governor's decision to go-ahead with the prosecution of Yeddyurappa. 29 buses were burnt down in Bangalore, Hasan, Tumkur and Davanagere district showing that its public property that gets a beating when a bandh is declared. In Bangalore, Jayanagar, Electronic City and K R Puram saw incidents of bus and tyre burning and incidents of stone-pelting as well. City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari has issued prohibitory orders (Sec 144) in Bangalore to ward off untoward incidents. Extra police personnel have been pressed to duty and more than thirty platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and 18,000 policemen are put in place to tackle the volatile situation. Forces from the City Armed Reserve, District Armed reserve and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) are also in service. Schools and colleges have declared a holiday and many scheduled exams have been postponed due to the unpredictable nature of the bandh in Karnataka.Traffic to the the IT hub Electronic City has almost been suspended, as miscreants unleashed violence, burning tyres and effigies of the Governor. Many call the Governor, a mouth-piece of the Congress and his action a politically-motivated one. The BJP activists believe that the Congress party is out to seek revenge and break the BJP stronghold in the state. The Governor on the other hand is justifying his stand and has commented that he has acted within the constitutional framework. Hope that the political stalemate is resolved, if not for the smooth political functioning in the state at least for the innocent public who always remains at the receiving end whenever a bandh is declared.

Dhobi Ghat director is everyone’s friend

Mixed reviews of Dhobi Ghat haven't upset director Kiran Rao and she believes those who liked the film are her target audience as she had always maintained that the film was not for everyone. 'I have heard different things. I have enjoyed some of the reviews very much. Some reviews were of people who didn't like the film that much. I am happy that some people liked it and they are the kind of people for whom we made this film,'  said Kiran. 'This is an unusual film and not for everyone's taste, which was expected. I am glad that that the audience I made the film for are liking it,' she added. Kiran's directorial debut is set in Mumbai. She tries to portray the city in its true colours through four people who come from very different backgrounds. When their worlds intersect, this leaves them forever altered. Monica Dogra (Shai) plays an Indian-American banker who is in the city for a photographic expedition, Prateik Babbar (Munna) is a washerboy and Kriti Malhotra essays Yasmin, while Aamir Khan, who is also producing the film, plays a seclusive modern art painter. Prateik has garnered rave reviews for his performance from all corners and Kiran is also all praise for him. 'Prateik is already a big name in Bollywood, according to me. He has just arrived and has already proven himself with this film. He is a very versatile and very nuanced actor. I certainly hope he is going to get a lot more roles in future,' said Kiran. There was an appreciable footfall for Dhobi Ghat in the opening shows in PVR, says a source.

Kiran Rao, who debuts as a director with her film Dhobi Ghat is quite a friendly gal one must say. The director who is quite the centre of attention these days as her movie is about to hit screens on Friday is quoted as having said “Everyone’s my friend” by tabloids. Now the fact that this young lady is a very fine director and a confident one at that is certainly evident from the kind of movie that she is debuting with. In times of big block busters this young lady is coming out with a film which is sort of an art film. Rather, some years back it would have been called parallel cinema. However with a firm belief in herself and the subject of the film Dhobi Ghat which revolves around the four characters in the film who live in Mumbai and each has a separate view about life seems to be quite an interesting one.
In fact the movie has already started getting some rave publicity and despite the fact that super star Aamir Khan, Kiran’s husband is very much a part of the movie the focus is just Kiran Rao and her directorial debut. Now, with Kiran Rao maintaining such good PRO skills too by calling everyone her friend- she certainly has places to go!

BJP calls for Karnataka bandh

Violence was reported in various districts overnight as BJP called for a bandh on Saturday seeking Governor H R Bhardwaj's removal. Buses were set afire in at least four northern districts of Karnataka. Schools and colleges closed  in the state. Bus services were halted in Bangalore. BJP plans protest rallies in every district headquarter and a march to the Raj Bhawan has been planned in Bangalore at noon. BJP also plans to approach the high court on Saturday against the Governor's sanction to prosecute Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa. Bhardwaj on Friday gave sanction for the prosecution of Yeddyurappa in land scams and other corruption cases.

Amid high drama, JD-S members on Wednesday attempted to enter the Karnataka Assembly in a procession, blowing conch shells and carrying a big suitcase with documents claimed to be evidence of corruption against the BJP Government. Apparently, to hit back at Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who on Tuesday threatened to expose former prime minister, H D Devegowda's family's "misdeeds" with documentary evidence, JD-S members came armed with the "documents" relating to the BJP Government's alleged scams. JD-S members, led by H D Revanna, son of Devegowda, came in a procession blowing conch shells and beating a bronze cymbal and tried to enter the Assembly, but were prevented by marshals who also refused entry to some party MLAs holding placards. Speaker K G Bopaiah, who was not aware of the JD-S protest, ordered the marshals to allow the MLAs to come in after Opposition leader Siddaramaiah brought the incident of denial of their entry to his notice. As a group of MLAs brought a big sized suitcase and displayed placards against the government, a shocked Speaker ordered marshals to remove the materials from the House. "Yesterday the Chief Minister brought a suitcase and showed to the House that he had documents against Devegowda and his sons. Today we have brought documents over Yeddyurappa's scandals," Revanna and his party colleague, H C Balakrishna said, defending their action. When the House plunged into pandemonium, Bopaiah warned JD-S members that he would name them while Law Minister S Suresh Kumar rose to move a motion for their suspension. Siddaramaiah said this was not for the first time that placards had made way into the House and pointed out that during the Bharat Bandh last year, the Speaker had permitted BJP members to protest holding placards. This apparently made the BJP government rethink the process of suspending the JD-S members.

I came to know of this through the kind offices of the cyber - the net and the social net. I have now initiated my office, sitting some distance, to render immediate support and help. As individuals, as fraternity, as humans, that is the least we can do,” he wrote on his blog. Amitabh said that it's sad to see veteran actors on their knees due to unavoidable circumstances. “My prayers and wishes for Hangal Saheb. May he recover soon and without the worry and concern of where the next medication is going to come from,” he added. Earlier, celebrities like Jaya Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan have offered help to the actor. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had given Rs. 50,000 and film associations like Cine Artistes Welfare Trusta and Cine and TV Artists Association (CINTAA) have promised financial support to the actor. Hangal, who has acted in over 125 films, is in deep financial crunch, as he has been bed-ridden due to old-age-related ailments. His monthly medical bill is over Rs.15, 000. This has forced his son Vijay, 75, who worked in Bollywood as a still photographer but gave up his work due to back problem, to approach CINTAA for help.

After Aamir Khan, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has come forward to offer support to ailing veteran actor A.K. Hangal, who is languishing in penury. "It has been sad and unnerving to learn today of the dire condition of one of our most devoted and dedicated character artists of the industry, Mr A.K. Hangal. I came to know of this through the kind offices of the cyber - the net and the social net," Amitabh wrote on his blog bigb.bigadda.com. "I have now initiated my office, sitting some distance, to render immediate support and help. As individuals, as fraternity, as humans, that is the least we can do (sic)," he wrote. The 68-year-old has worked with Hangal in "Abhimaan", "Sholay" and "Sharabi", and Amitabh admits that he's disturbed to read about the 95-year-old's condition. "It has always been disturbing to read and learn of such occurrences. I do not wish to mention names here, for they are individuals that were idolised and revered in their prime, and bringing up their condition now is an act that would seem most demeaning to them and to their stature," he said. "Life's stories have been overloaded with vivid descriptions of unfortunate circumstances. Circumstances that have brought the greats down to their knees. It is shocking and most undesirable to comment on it, but a quiet yet considered action for their good, is what I would want to get involved in. And I do. My prayers and wishes for Hangal Saheb." Hangal, a professional tailor-turned-actor, currently lives with his son Vijaya, 75, in his ground floor flat in Saraswati Apartments, Santacruz East. He is unable to afford his mounting medical bills as he suffering from old age related problems. The father-son duo together have a medical bill of over Rs.15,000 per month and now have to practically choose between spending on food and medication.
