Nibali ready to take on Contador at the Giro d'Italia
armin-Cervelo is gunning for the pink jersey in Saturday’s team time trial to open the Giro d’Italia with hopes of repeating their breakout success in 2008.

That year’s Giro win that put Christian Vande Velde into the pink jersey as just the second American to ever lead the Giro was a huge success for Garmin. Now, four years later, Garmin is one of the established teams in the peloton and comes to the Giro intent on making its presence felt from Torino to Milano. Garmin confirmed its Giro nine that includes Americans Tyler Farrar, Tom Peterson and Peter Stetina with David Millar on the hunt for stages and Christophe Le Mevel for their GC hopes.

“The 2008 Giro was very important for the team, to win the opening stage and gain the pink jersey,” said Garmin-Cervelo sport director Lionel Marie. “We expect to be among the favorites for Saturday. We made some training today with the riders and everyone is very motivated. We have Millar as our anchor rider and guys like Lancester and (Cameron) Meyer will be very fast.”

Marie said Le Mevel will be hoping to finish among the top 10 when the Giro ends in Milano while Farrar and Millar will be riding for stage wins.

“Tyler likes the Giro because the course suits him well. We have a strong team to help in the sprints and we can hope to win one or two stages with him. It’s a very hard Giro this year and there are not many chances for the sprinters. They will all come in the first week, so it will be very intense competition among the sprinters,” Marie said. “Tyler rode the Tour of Turkey to get back into the rhythm of racing. He was resting after Roubaix and comes to the Giro feeling very strong. Millar will also be looking to ride into breakaways and to try to win a stage. He is very ambitious and wants to do something big in the Giro this year.”

Marie said Peterson will be one of the key helpers for Le Mevel in the second half of the Giro while Stetina makes his grand tour debut with the goal of doing what he can for the team and reaching Milano.
