Jaganmohan Reddy has brought his war against the Congress to the party's home turf. And accompanying him are nearly 26 of the Congress' own men. Jagan, the son of former Congress leader YSR Reddy, is on a day-long fast in Delhi to protest against what he describes as the "injustice" delivered to Andhra's farmers by a recent verdict. A tribunal recently increased the share of water that Karnataka and Maharashtra will get from the River Krishna. Andhra Pradesh's share is the largest, but farmers there have been unofficially diverting more water than they were entitled to.
Jagan split from the Congress in December after months of rebellion which began when he was not picked to replace his father as Chief Minister after YSR died in a helicopter crash in September 2009. Jagan has announced his own party - the YSR party. Present with him on Tuesday in Delhi and actively lending their support are 24 Congress MLAs and MLCs from Andhra Pradesh, and two members of Parliament. The Congress -which is in power in Andhra Pradesh - has been trying to shake off the fear that a faction will exit the party to join Jagan.
