Christmas in Washington 2010

The New York Post has reported that fashion icon and First Lady Michelle Obama once again has shown off her economical style by wearing a second-hand gown for the “Christmas in Washington” concert. The event took place and was filmed this past Sunday and will air on TNT this Friday, Dec. 17. Known around the world for her impeccable taste, Mrs. Obama has gotten people talking once again with a black-lace overlay gown that has a square neckline and full skirt. The dress is said to be the first vintage gown worn by a first lady to a public event.
Made in the 1950′s by influential American designer Norman Norelli, the second-hand garment was chosen from New York Vintage in Chelsea for an undisclosed price. However, an estimate on the gown puts it in the market of $2,500. This is no surprise as the demand and prices of quality vintage clothing have greatly increased in the past few years.
“We are truly honored that the first lady has chosen a gown from New York Vintage as her first venture into vintage couture,” co-owner Jon Schneck told The Huffington Post.
This elegant hand-me-down is one of the many vintage dresses that the first lady is scheduled to wear in the near future.
“Other dresses from our archive have been scheduled for use by the first lady later this year,” said Schneck.
In the past Mrs. Obama has been regarded as a major trendsetter by those in the fashion world and regular citizens alike and has used her high position to support the American fashion industry. She has helped many up and coming American designers, such as Jason Wu, Maria Pinto, and Thakoon Panichgul, get their start and they are now enjoying great success.Obama has also set a great example for smart shopping by frequenting reasonably priced retailers like J.Crew and has become notorious for wearing something one day and that item being sold out the next. However, the first lady’s vintage gown is, unfortunately, one of a kind.
Still, with this garment’s buzz she is sure to gain a lot of attention. Though her purchase was definitely a pricey one, her choice of a second-hand garment has huge implications for the American public and it will hopefully encourage others to adopt the smart shopping habits that come with buying already-worn clothing. Vintage clothes save resources and purchasing less items at a higher quality so that they will last longer benefits not only the economy but the environment  as well.
