Danny Downes keeps a straight face and stays in character as he throws down the patriotic gauntlet ahead of tonight's bout at WEC 53 (9 p.m. ET, Versus) against Chinese lightweight Tiequan "The Mongolian Wolf" Zhang: Downes, a teammate of headliner Anthony Pettis, jokingly (we think) describes his showdown with the unbeaten Zhang as a Rocky IV-style proxy for a rivalry between superpowers. "
Tiequan Zhang has won all 12 of his professional MMA fights via submission or some form of knockout.
Sadly, Downes-Zhang has been relegated to the preliminary card. But they have 17 knockouts or submissions in their 18 combined victories, so there's a good chance of quick and exciting action, which would help their chances of being replayed on the TV broadcast.
Zhang (12-0) has never failed to finish an opponent before the final horn. Downes (6-1) suffered the first loss of his career in June when Chris Horodecki submitted him with a rear-naked choke.
